Best Current Sprint Phones?

My wife and I are Sprint customers and due for an upgrade in about a week. It's so hard to keep up with all of the new Android phones. My wife is a casual user and really likes her physical keyboard. I'm more of a power user, rooting and modding and all that and using my phone more to its limits. Any advice on which devices we should look at without breaking the bank?

For you I would recommend the EVO 4G. It's currently 99 bucks on Sprint.com. Or for 199 you can get the Evo 3D. Root was achieved about a month ago for it. There are a lot of roms out for it as well as a few kernels floating around. Mine is overclocked to 1.8 Ghz. You couldn't go wrong with either one because developer support for HTC devices is through the roof. I would stay away from the Moto Photon which is also 199. Not enough developer support for it in my opinion. For your wife being that she wants a physical keyboard, I would recommend the Epic 4G or the Evo Shift. Both are 99 bucks.
 
I have a Samsung Moment right now, and I've been decently happy with it. Of course, I don't have any other Android phone to compare it against. A couple of co-workers have Incredibles, though, and seem quite happy.

What about the Nexus S? How does it compare?

The Nexus is made by Samsung. Similar specs to the EPIC 4G. The Nexus does not have an SD card slot though or TouchWiz. I think the Nexus also has Near Field Communication. Other that that specs are similar. 1 Ghz single core processor. Super AMOLED display. 4" display. 5 Megapixel cameras. Front facing cameras. Some people like the pure Google experience of the Nexus. Some don't. Maybe you should swing by the Sprint store and test drive a few devices.
 
For the OP, the EVO 3D sounds like the way to go. Powerful phone with developer support.

For the wife, I don't know of any good keyboard phones on Sprint other than the Epic and the EVO Shift. Both honorable phones, but have been out long enough that I doubt I could recommend buying one now.
 
I got the 3d for myself and plan on rooting,this my second one had to return the first,
talked my wife into getting the shift and its the bomb,it actually downloads faster than my 3d,she likes the slide out keyboard,and now she really likes it and I have to help with some of the settings,great phone.
i prefer htc over samsung,if for no other reason than the phone part,all my phones in the past have gotten better signals and fewer dropped calls where i travel,samsung was drop call city and no signal city. hope this helps,
 
Haha, The shift is a little beast. it's the red headed step child, though. I love mine, and cannot for the life of me (although I want to) justify upgrading it. With a custom rom I can get more than 24 hours out of a battery charge with moderate/heavy use. It has been overclocked to 1.6ghz, and has some gnarly benchmarks with different speed tests. But anyway, glad you found phones that work for you, and I am sure you will be happy with both your choices.
 
Yesterday, we got out and got our hands on some phones. My wife is actually quite interested in the Samsung Replenish. She likes the eco-friendliness and the available solar charging battery cover. I like the fact that it saves me ten bucks a month.

I'm pretty much deciding between the Evo, the Shift, and the Epic. Here are my thoughts. Feel free to tell me I'm right or wrong.

Evo
----
Pros: Big screen, nice hardware, lots of support, HTC
Cons: No physical keyboard (I'm spoiled by this), price, bad battery life

Shift
-----
Pros: Keyboard, 3.6" screen is still significantly larger than the 3.1" screen on my Moment, still pretty good hardware, HTC, actually newer than the Evo, can get it free
Cons: Smaller, maybe not as awesome hardware?

Epic
-----
Pros: Keyboard, large screen, feels really light
Cons: Samsung (although I like my Moment ok), Price


I feel like I'm leaning toward the Shift. I can get it free, whereas the other two are $100. The Shift has a smaller screen, but if I really want a big-screen experience for things like movies, I have a Nook Color. The Shift doesn't seem significantly different from my Moment, but it's 4G, which will eventually be a good thing.

I hate decisions.
 
The shift is a good phone. And the specs may not reflect it, but the hardware is newer (read; better) than the big Evo 4G. And like I said above, the battery life is really good for an android phone. I didn't think I'd likek the keyboard, but have since grown to really like it a lot for whipping off a long email or mass texting.

I usually get whatever the top of the line phone Sprint has at the time I'm due for my yearly upgrade (at the moment: EVO 3D, Photon 4G, (soon) Galaxy S 2). I do however agree with what you are saying about the EVO Shift... In my opinion its definitely the most underrated phone on the market. If the smaller screen size works for you, I really cannot think of anything negative about the EVO Shift... Always hearing good things about it.
