Best Encryption For droid X?

I have the same question, especially considering that gingerbread on the droid x appears to have native encription for data on the sd card. I don't understand how the native encryption works or whether a third party app would be more effective.

Settings / location & security settings \ data encryption

When you click on data encryption, there are 2 options where you can encrypt:

"1. Device data encryption (encrypts all personal data on your phone)
2. Memory card encryption (encrypts files you save to your phone's memory card)"

Has anyone tried this? If so, how do we know that it works?
 
I really like APG for encryption... it does a good job with 200 MB .3gp videos. Watch out for the programs that simply change the file extension on your photos/videos rather than actually encrypting them. If it "encrypts" a video instantly, it didn't actually encrypt at all.
 
Can anyone give some technical insight on what this ominous "Device data encryption" and "memory card encryption" uses under the hood? dm-crypt, maybe? i'm completely new to Android and naturally want a phone with encryption so a thief cannot steal my data. How is the encryption passphrase entered, and when? When starting up the phone, or do I have to enter it for unlocking the phone? Does it slow down things greatly, or just drain some battery life but that's it? I've searched the whole web on how this encryption works but wasn't able to find *anything*.

There are Android apps to encrypt
- files
- folders
- apps
- virtual containers

As I know, no encrytion for the entire SD card.

I wasn't talking about third-party apps but about the built-in gingerbread functionality. That is what I'm interested in. I want all data to be encrypted by default, not some folders or files or whatever. E.g. my calendar, my eMail and all that should be saved encrypted, even in cache, since they contain sensitive personal information. It should be easy to see that without this kind of encryption, anyone getting a hands on your phone can read out pretty much all your sensitive data, so this is crucial.
 
OK, now I understand :)

This kind of encrypting/decrypting "on-the-fly" of phone storage and SD card would be my wish too.

But when I see what long times encryption apps need with large files ... :(

Modern phones like the Galaxy S2 should be more than capable of on-the-fly encryption/decryption of all data. Keep in mind that when you encrypt or decrypt large files, it might take a while. But if only a few kilobytes are written from time to time (e.g. when receiving an eMail) there should be no issue, that goes fast.
