Best Free App for Downloading Books?

Not sure if this is the right forum for my question. Had no luck searching this site for info on my question.

Have friend that had a Kindle that broke and wants to get an android tablet for his reading. I know he can download the Kindle app but not sure you get all the features of the Kindle app without having a Kindle tablet. What are the best free apps for downloading and reading books?

Not sure what features you want, but the Kindle app certainly works as an ebook reader, and will have the sync features and ability to buy books. Amazon want to sell content, so they aren't going to cripple it and expect everyone to buy a Kindle tablet, because that will reduce their content sales.

Otherwise there are many other apps. I have Moon+ on my phone. But I don't use an app for downloading books (though they all have that ability) but prefer to manage my collection on a computer and sideload to my devices, so can't really compare that aspect.

You should remember that Kindle books will contain Amazon DRM, which will stop other apps reading them, and are in a different format from others which not all apps can read anyway. There are solutions to both, but if (s)he already has a Kindle collection why not try the Kindle app? You can have other apps as well if you prefer.

BTW why only free apps? Most paid apps cost less a coffee from one of the big chains, or, dare I say it, a book from a mainstream author, and are a tiny fraction of the cost of a tablet. But anyway, most paid ebook readers have a free version too, so you can try as many as you like and see which works best for you, then buy if you wish or put up with ads if not (because most free apps of any sort are ad-supported - the developer has to make a living somehow).

If his main purpose for the device is reading. I would suggest getting a Kindle Fire because that's just what's it made for.

If he wants to do other things with the tablet as well, just know that after reading on it for a couple of hours your eyes may be fatigued.

Actually if you are doing a lot of reading an e-ink device is easier on the eyes than a tablet. But it is a single function device.
