Best free SMS app?

What's the best free SMS application? I've read a few reviews on some and am afraid of long wait times between sending texts.
 
Now this is a question that rarely gets asked. :D

Handcent and GoSMS are the two most popular as of late.
 
Another vote for Handcent. Admittedly I haven't used many, but Handcent does everything I would want, so I need not look anywhere else.
 
Handcent by far for carrier txt messages. i also use textfree alot when im at my cabin it works over wifi and is great when there is no cell service
 
I tried Handcent, then switched to GO SMS...I still use GO. I just like it better than Handcent (even though I paid to be ad-free).
 
Used chomp, handcent, and go. Go sms is the best by far. No ads, and the loading times for me were way faster then the other two. Works flawlessly with Go launcher on my device. The dev issues updates all the time and keeps a running thread on XDA for you to report issues and make requests.

If you're looking for the best then take them for a spin and see for yourself. Polling is only going to tell you which are the most popular. Best is always highly subjective and not necessarily the same as popular.

It's the same as a teetotaller asking 1,000 people which should be his favourite drink when he comes off the wagon. :D
