I would suggest Swype if you can get yourself a beta invitation 
Try hitting up the Swype | Text Input for Screens site and Click in the Swype Beta area to join. Might be a few weeks till you get in but once they send you a download link you won't be sorry! I haven't had any issues with it whatsoever and I hardly ever find myself using the hardware keyboard let alone any other soft keyboard. Hope you decide to try it, I'm sure you wont be sorry.
