Best method to upgrade to a higher Android version

So what is the best way to upgrade from one release to the other, WITHOUT losing my apps and data ? Can I run something like Titanium Backup, then upgrade (in my case Lollipop 5.0.1 to Marshmallow), then restore my apps and data using TB ? Or is there a better way ?
I know this sounds like a simple question, but I want to make sure have it right.

Thanks

If an update/upgrade is available from Lenovo, then that would be the way to go. For the most part they will maintain all of your information and most of your settings. I would clear all your app ans system caches first, which should give the update less to bump into.

If the only way to upgrade is to flash new firmware, then you're going to have to start from scratch. Titanium would be a good was to back up apps and data but you'll need to get it off your device before you flash it and restoring to a different version of Android doesn't always work. Just prepare yourself for some data/settings loss.
