Best Music App?

Groat

Lurker
I'm currently using the standard "Play Music" app on my Nexus 5, but am wondering if there is a better free music app. It seems to use a lot of battery, plus shuffle is pretty poor (20 minutes and i'm hearing the same song again).

Any suggestions?

Personally I'd recommend PowerAmp or Neutron. Neither is free, though both have trial versions, but compare the prices to a beer or a coffee and it's not a big deal really.

Used to use PowerAmp, then Samsung's new default player (which is actually good IMO, challenging PowerAmp for quality), but lately I've been using Spotify free. Since I already have unlimited data, this allows me to not buy music, but still not be pirating stuff. LOL.

I've tried MANY media players over the years (including Play Music, PowerAmp, TuneWiki, WinAmp, DoubleTwist, MixZing, et al) but MediaMonkey (free) is my favorite media player app-- especially if used in conjunction with the free MediaMonkey for Windows because then you can sync music, videos, podcasts & playlists between your PC and Android device. There's also a free MediaMonkey Remote app which lets you control your PC's playback from your phone. It's the only PC-to-Android TOTAL SOLUTION that I know of. (It's like the iTunes total solution for PC/Mac-to-iPhone, but it's way more flexible and powerful.)

Prior to switching to MediaMonkey, I liked MixZing the best. Here's why.

For music streaming, I use Pandora, but that's only because I've always been so happy with it that I've never felt a need to try its competitors.

The only problem I have with Pandora (besides the fact it won't stream on 128 KB throttled data) is the app is clumsy to exit. Unless there's a way I don't know about. :-) Oh, and bookmark should be on the player screen next to like.

On my version of Pandora you can quit by simply hitting the settings button (physical or on-screen) and selecting quit. Same for bookmarking. Though typically I just hit "pause" and then go to another task, rather than quitting. But honestly, about 90% of the time I use Pandora, it's with a Bluetooth car stereo or Bluetooth headphones, and I just have Llama automatically launch/kill Pandora upon connection/disconnection.

I don't think I saw that in the settings on the player page, I have to tap back to the prior page, then settings, then quit. I just wish I didn't have to tap so much. :-)))

Maybe because I'm on an older version of Pandora and they've "improved" it since then? :)

I suspect we are comparing apples to oranges here.
Spotify and Pandora play music over the web.
PowerAmp and Rocket Player play music loaded onto your Android storage.
I use Rocket Player and Pandora. Don't need to even try Spotify as I have no real complaint about Pandora.

if you have to stream - I've tried and I like spotify. I use it at home. portable account moves to devices etc etc.

best feature - if you want to - you can create a playlist and LOAD IT to your phone. as it spotify will let you download the oGG vorbis files to your phone - for play only in the spotify app. (you can go find them if you wish but don't bother) it will require the occasionally ping to the spotify server to verify you are connected and you have permission.

that doesn't use huge amounts of data and is win win.

HOWEVER - I hate streaming in general - so instead I load up the 64gb card on my note 3 and play tunes with Jet Audio. which IMO sounds better than any other app I've used. granted much of that - has to do with the tuneable options you have with the app. better than poweramp or cubed, IMO.

I agree, Napalm. I'll stream when I am connected to a network (I have never had a need for a data account). When I am out and about, I'll play MP3 files from my SD card. Best of both worlds.

Actually, if you use Spotify Premium, you can download your playlists to your device for playing offline, so it's not exactly offline vs streaming player.
