Best way to track S3 if lost without rooting

A friend recently lost his GS3 while on a trip outside Canada and Samsungdive.com did not help tracking it, obviously because the data was turned off in roaming.

I do not want the same fate, so wanted to hear from others, what is the best way/app to track the phone, once it can connect to an unsecured Wifi, if ever lost.

The Avast free app seems great, but it requires rooting the phone so that the thief cannot un-install the App. I do not want to do that and loose warranty and be tied to the release schedule of whichever ROM I go with.

If you turn off data, nothing will help you.

Well if you are roaming, you will end up with a bill of more than the C$700 or so that the phone costs.

Idea is that Wifi is still ON, so it should still be able to get an internet connection and let the app do its work.

Plan B is one that I read about, not sure if it works.

If wifi is connected, everything works.

Plan B is an "after the fact" solution. You install it after its lost by using web based Google play. If the phone has a data connection, it will install and report location.
