Better text input for virtual keyboards? Apps?

I need a better way to input text on my Sprint Hero. The stock keyboard is terrible. What are some good options? I've researched the forum, and most people swear by Swype. The problem, of course, is Swype beta is closed. I'd gladly pay $50 for this app, but that won't make it come to market any faster.

I need something now. Are there any decent interim solutions while I anxiously await the release of Swype?

Thanks,

I would email swype and tell them that you will give them 50 bucks. they might let you in.
I use swype like crazy. but otherwise +1 for swiftkey

if they combined swiftkey and swype I would put down alot of money

I found swype worthless, it doesn't make sense to swype when your hand is in front of the letters/numbers.

Uninstalled Swype and moved on.

you didnt try enough then.. once you get it down you can swype way faster then individually pressing keys. i increase my texting speed by like 30 wpm

I used Swype for a few weeks. Got really used too it, though sometimes I thought I could type quicker normally... that was mainly for longer words though. Short words were very quick to type!

I'm now using SwiftKey, its brilliant! It's actually predicted a full text a few times, which is impressive. I really like how it seems to learn how you text and often find it'd know what to say next before I've even thought about it!

i actually find it the oppisite. i will type words like hey but long words i swype

the only reason i didnt give swiftkey a full shot is because it creates its learning from your text messages when you start. (i use google voice so this didnt work)
so the time i was trying it out it was never even close to guesses.

have you tried slideit? I find it slightly better than swiftkey. I would say it is closest to swype but the keys are bigger.

Your right, but I don't find Swype as good to use as Ultra Keyboard.
