Help BLU Vivo XL - The Case Of The Duplicating Icon

BLU Vivo XL with Android 6.0, Nov 5 2016 security patch level. Fairly new phone for me - a couple of weeks old.

Occasionally I'll see a duplicate app icon appear on the desktop, sometimes on the same page as I put the original icon, sometimes on a different page. I can't just delete the extra icon because both are associated with the same app. If I delete on, both are deleted, and the app gets uninstalled.

I suppose it's possible that I'm not using the proper procedure to arrange icons on the desktop, but there don't seem to be any alternatives. When I long-press an icon that I want to move, an X appears on every icon on every screen - tapping on the X deletes the icon and the app as well, as it no longer appears in the Settings|Applications list. Dragging an icon with an X showing moves it, as expected. The action is the same whether I work on the normal screen or the "pinched" screen. Unlike my old phone which, when a desktop screen is pinched, displays all of the desktop pages on one screen, this just shrinks the page down and pops up a couple of "cleanup" icons below it.

This phone has no "apps grid" that shows all the installed apps on a page or two. As far as I can tell, if you can see an icon, the app is installed. If you can't see an icon, the app isn't installed.

I haven't fully verified this yet, but it seems to occur after a reboot or power-up. The icons that move/duplicate are for apps that I've installed, not the ones that came pre-installed on the phone. I've used all of these apps on my previous phone (a ZTE-740 running Android 4.1) and never saw this problem. The apps with the duplicating icons, so far, are:

PACalculate (Powersoft Audio)
Spectrum Analyzer (Keuwlsoft)
Function Generator (Keuwlsoft)

I'm going to e-mail Keuwlsoft to see if he's ever heard of this. I had his Spirit Level and Compass apps installed and I thing I saw this same duplicate icon behavior with them as well, but I've removed them . I should probalby try them again to see if they have the same disease as the other Keuwl apps, which, by the way, are functionally the best ones of the lot for what they do.

I've seen unfavorable comments about the app launcher that I have, which seems to be the standard Google launcher for this version of the OS. I've looked at alternatives to see if something else works better, but nobody seems to like anything very much.

This is so annoying, I really want to find a solution.

Sounds like an issue or bug with the stock Vivo(Funtouch OS) launcher that they need to fix. FYI there's no separate app-drawer with Vivo, all apps are on the home screens or in folders, however you shouldn't be seeing duplicate icons for apps.

Have you tried installing Nova launcher as your home screen?

That was one that I looked at, probably found it in a "ten best launcher" article. I know that people who post in forums usually only tell you about problems without offering solutions, but that one just seemed to have so many negative comments that I didn't bother with it. Also, it looked like it did more than I wanted it to do, kind of like it wanted to take over everything.

In fact I haven't tried any alternate lauchers yet
because I wasn't sure about two things, so help me out here if you can.

If I download and install one, will it simply replace the existing launcher

and, more important,

If I don't like it, how can I get the original launcher back?

I don't see anything on this phone that references Funtouch OS, nor does anything look like the images that show when I Googled Funtouch OS. Under "Custom build version," this one says:

Yeah, that's about the first thing I noticed when I started housebreaking this phone.

however you shouldn't be seeing duplicate icons for apps.

Agree. This is one of those "is it just me?" questions, but I guess there aren't a lot of BLU users around these parts.

Funtouch OS is what Vivo calls their heavily modified and skinned version of Android, that runs on Vivo phones. And one of the modifications over stock Android is to not have a separate app drawer, so it's more like Apple iOS in this respect.

Oppo does a very similar thing as well, but they call theirs Color OS, although Vivo, Oppo and OnePlus are the same company, BBK Electronics.
