blue vs grey

SofTA

Newbie
Hello,

I'm new to Android and to KIES. Will someone please explain to me why my wifi icon in the tray is sometimes blue and sometimes grey? And would this have anything to do with syncing issues?

Blue is when you have a connection, Grey is when its either looking for a connection, or there is a password that is needed to use the wifi and you haven't entered it yet.

Actually, I have the power settings set to airplane mode, so when I'm not connected I see the airplane icon. I assure you I am online with a grey icon.

I can have a blue wifi icon for days, and then one day it'll be grey. It seems to change back & forth, and is quite possibly a setting I'm changing, but I can't determine what setting it is that might be responsible.

The blue icon means you're communicating with Google servers, the grey icon means you're not.

Note: Network status icons turn blue if you have a Google Account added to
your tablet and the tablet is connected to Google services for syncing
your Gmail, Calendar events, contacts, backing up your settings, and
so on. If you do not have a Google Account or if, for example, you are
connected to a Wi-Fi network that is not connected to the Internet, the
network icons are gray.

sik00, you got my brain moving in the right direction, but I still needed to understand what was causing it to change. Knowing I've been going into settings often and changing things, I figured it /had/ to be in there somewhere.

The link you provided was for a manual similar to the one I have, but mine (I don't remember where I got it) has a file size of 5.8 MB and is 181 pages long, compared to yours with a file size of 3.4 MB and 147 pages.

The icon found on page 18 of your manual is /similar/ to the icon found on page 20 in my book. The icon in my book is /exact/ to what is in my tray. (see screenshot). Hmmm. Slightly different versions of the OS I guess.

Anyway, I went into >Settings, >Accounts and sync, and disabled <Background data under General sync settings. THAT turned my icon grey!

So it's enabling the background syncing - with Google servers - that turns the grey wifi icon blue.

You got it ;)

The manual I linked could've been an older version, I'm not sure. Glad you figured it out.
Oh, and welcome to the forums :)
