Help Bluetooth Support Discussion

One of the features that gives this watch a longer battery life is its use of bluetooth low energy, which unfortunately didn't make it into android until 4.3, so many phone manufacturers are behind the curve with BT 4.0 LE (low energy) support.

I just did a search for virgin mobile phones support of BTLE and Android 4.3 for use with the Moto 360 and there appeared to be none. Lack of BTLE support on most current android phones could be an issue for prospective buyers of this watch..

Does anyone know.. the current LG, etc phones that support bluetooth 4.0 and android 4.1 or 4.2, is it likely that their BT chips can support BTLE once their software is updated to android 4.3?

Samsung Galaxy S3 and newer are also LE compatible with 4.3 or higher. There was some confusion when the S3 came out because it was listed as LE, but didn't actually have it until Google added the code to Android in 4.3.

The thing that kind of weirds me out about the whole smart watch thing is this. It's going to have a constant Bluetooth connection, right? I use Bluetooth all the time. As soon as I get into my Jeep, it syncs. When I'm at work, I have BT headphones. So now, before those connections can be made, I'm going to have to switch BT off on my watch, right? You can't have two BT devices connected at once. Or am I misunderstanding how this works? Like the phone will only make a BT connection to your watch when it gets a notification or something? And if that's the case, when I'm either driving or using my BT headphones, it makes the watch essentially useless? Or do we simply not know yet?

I think you CAN have multiple BT devices connected at the same time, just not multiple audio devices/headsets.

I just bought the 360 and I am waiting for it to arive. I have concerns about using other Bluetooth devises once I receive it. My main concern is in my car. Currently I have it set up so that my phone automatically detects my car's Bluetooth and begins playing back the podcast i was listening to prior.

I worry that if my phone is connected to the 360 it won't connect to the car's Bluetooth and function as mentioned above.

Any insight on this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I think it will depend on your device allowing multiple bluetooth connections at once.

I used a Galaxy Gear (before selling it recently), but was still able to connect to both the Gear and my BT receiver at the same time without issues. I've also had a BT headset and the Gear at the same time.

If that watch could do it, I don't see any issues with your car, unless your phone doesn't allow for multiple connections at one time.

Not a problem with droid maxx and Acura. Its actually really convenient. Tell watch to call joe shmoe and it starts ringing thru the car. Never take the phone out of my pocket.

I hope you have the same luck.

I am running stock Nexus 5 in a Mazda 3 2014.

Yes, your nexus 5 should be able to dual connect.
so that watch came and you were right Drex! i was able to be paired with my car and the watch. I also use BT headphones at the gym. yesterday I started noticing a stuttering affect in both the BT headphones and in the car. I unpaired android wear and this cleared the issue. I will report back if the issue persists. in the mean time please let me know if you have any less extreme fixes for this issue

I'll have to see how the Android wear protocol works. I'll let you know when my watch delivers tomorrow.

So it seams that the studering I was experiencing was due to Android wear searching for a device. When my watch is dead Android wear will disrupt other Bluetooth connections. I simply disconnect in the ap and the issue is fixed

Good to know, in case anybody dual connects. Thanks for the update

My sister is contemplating the 360 but only if it actually would do what she needs it to. She works in home health care and wants to see incoming calls and texts, not necessarily answer them but just see them. She leaves her phone in her bag so rarely hears it ring and has missed a few important calls recently.

What is the range for the watch? How far can she stray from her phone and still be able to see who is calling?

She's not able to check her phone a lot during the day so I think this would be helpful for her in general, but the incoming call checking is really the key.

Thought I posted this, sorry if it repeats...
I'm good for about that distance, but got much further with my Gear 2 Neo. Do I need to be further? Probably not, but I certainly reached much further down the hall as school with my Sammy than this device.

Only real time I find it inconvenient is on the off day that I forget to take my phone out with me during recess...my classroom is the corner classroom closest to the playground so with my Neo, I could still be within range as it made it closer to 40 yards as opposed to 40 ft. Now, I have no choice but to bring my phone with me, which I should anyway due to potential emergencies. So it's all good.

You may have posted it, I've been loosely following most threads in case I have a moment of weakness myself. I didn't recall seeing it mentioned and wanted to get some solid info for her.

Thanks guys.

Oh, no...
I apologize. I didn't mean it like that. I meant, I literally thought I wrote that out and hit send, but it didn't send or at least show up. So I was writing it again and afraid it was going to post twice. My bad for the confusion.

Range is fine for leaving the phone on my desk at work and chatting a couple of cubicles over with a co-worker. It's not ok with my phone sitting on the charger by my bed at home, in the middle of a 1000 sqft condo, but there's also a lot of old-construction walls.

Compared to my Pebble this is not nearly as good range. Maybe the Pebble was just overkill? I'm a part time Crossfit trainer and my Pebble was great for coaching classes and controlling music without being next to the stereo, I don't think my Moto360 would be able to do that. Does that matter though? Probably not. Shorter range is good for many reasons, including "trusted user" actions based on watch proximity.

I have the original moto x and just bought myself an early birthday gift last night of the Moto 360. I was concerned about this but it was confirmed this morning. My moto x will only connect to the watch and will not connect to the car simultaneously. Now my moto x has been having WiFi / Bluetooth issues for about a week so it may be tied to that, not sure. But I tried several times and while connected to the 360 my car would not connect to my phone.

I do plan on upgrading the 2014 Moto X or the Nexus 6 but wondering if there are any suggestions in the mean time that might help me through this.

With my LG G3, my wife's 2014 Civic SI, and the Moto 360; they all connect simultaneously. The biggest issue is with Hondalink and Android, it wants to be the microphone in voice situations initiated by the phone or car, but does not work and then screws up the connection (nothing to do really with the android wear). I have had my phone think a comedian on Pandora said "ok google" and start Now and turn the car audio off and try to use the microphone in the car to detect a voice command but then not work (car microphone does not pick up phone voice google commands and neither does the phone) and screw up the pandora audio connection so I have to reset the BT connection in the phone.

I can use voice reply directly from watch fine.
