Boiling Water and an HTC

OOPSY

Lurker
:confused:I dropped my HTC Desire in boiling water tonight and didn't know it. It must have fallen out of my shirt. It boiled for about 15 minutes. IS there any way that I can retrieve information from it? It's gotta be dead after that long. Any help?

Start by doing nothing.

Let it dry completely, for a few days before even trying to power it back on.

At that temperature and duration your first point of failure is likely to be the screen.

After a few days of drying, if the screen works, you may be ok (although the battery just took a severe hit from that) and it's likely you did just significantly reduce the lifetime of the semiconductors.

With any luck, the SD card may be salvageable at least.

Sorry this happened - but welcome to the forums! :)

if it wont start is there any way to retrieve my contacts and text messages and stuff? THanks for your help!

Your contacts should be backed up to your google account. I would think the texts are going to be lost unless it boots after you let it dry well. The best thing for you to try is Early's suggestions ;) water doesn't break electronics when they short circuit they break so you may be lucky if you let it dry out.

Welcome to AF :D Sorry you had to join on such crappy conditions :(

Put the phone in rice...not kidding...unpack the battery and drop the pieces individually into rice...it will aid tremendously in the drying process.

This. A few years ago, my friend dropped a psp in some water, and it got inside and caused a lot of condensation behind the screen. He put it in some rice, and a couple days later, it looked perfect again, and worked no problem. At this point, it's worth a try, isn't it? ;)

Maybe you should point out that this is UNCOOKED rice. ;)

uncooked rice in a plastic bag and seal it tight .. for a few days in a warm place (not hot)... for at least 2 days...

again.. do not try to .. turn on your phone!!! till you finish the rice process.
if you do.. you are taking a higher risk of shorting out parts in the phone.
