Brand new SD card not showing

Instead of waiting forever to save up for 256 gb, I got a 16 gb SD card at Walgreens on sale for $16.19. It's a Sandisk 98 speed, I guess. I put it in the S5, which was pretty easy since it's currently backless, but the phone evidently doesn't recognize it. I shut it off first and then switched it back on, with no message about it. Then I looked under storage, which still didn't show it. I shut it down and put it back on again, but still nothing. I'm pretty sure I installed it the right way, contacts face down and at the top, after I took out the battery. What should I do, besides save the packaging and receipt?

This is probably the fourth time I've shut down the phone, taken out the battery, reinstalled the SD card and battery, and switched it on again. I don't understand why it isn't working. I just got the card today and took it out of the package less than one hour ago. I suppose it could be defective, although it looks all right.

Well, guess who's an idiot. I was putting it in the wrong slot, the bottom one, not the top. It's no wonder the sim card slot didn't work for it. Of course, now I have another question. There are two choices, unmount and format. I should probably go with the second one. Then what happens? How do I transfer files to the SD card and make it the default save location?

On the pulldown on the main screen it says tap here to transfer media files. I did that and it apparently transferred Android and LOST.DIR, whatever that is. (It claims to contain no files.) It says 1.31 mb used of 14.83 gb. How do I transfer photos and videos to it as well? Is there anything else it will accept without being turned into adaptive storage?

Apparently it's doing its job without my help. The last I checked it was at 7.28. Also, the videos and photos I looked at now say external. That means they're on the real SD card, right?

Now it says 8.19, but the latest photos are apparently in emulated. How do I move them to the real SD card and make sure it's the default save location? I don't see any way to do that.

Ok, I finally downloaded good ol' ES File Explorer. It sure looks different and what's with all the ads? It seems that if somebody wants something such as a different theme it requires downloading extra, possibly unnecessary stuff. Anyway, I went to the directory section and changed the download path to /storage/3532-6133. I guess that means it's actually saving to the real SD card now. I hope. I switched over a bunch of photos "manually" but it sure took a while and I'm not done yet. Is there anything else I should know about this?

It's still putting them in emulated, apparently. When I looked at the info on the latest shots, they all said emulated. What's going on here and how do I stop it?
