brightness stuck low

I have some knowledge of phones and help friends when they're having problems with their phones but this one has me stumped. I was given a galaxy rush (SPH-M830) with its brightness at its lowest, turning up the brightness does nothing and making the auto brightness also does nothing.

Have you tried setting it bright and restarting your phone? Maybe it just needs the little kick in the pants that restarting seems to do to settings changes.
Also, is your phone on power saving mode?
