buying a phone off ebay

If I buy a phone off ebay what should I look for besides a clean esn? If I do decide to get one with a clean esn what happens if a few weeks or months down the road they seller flags the esn as lost or stolen will I be left with no phone? And also if I have insurance currently on my phone if I file a claim will it go with the new phone or the old one?

The insurance should roll over to your new device.

As for the seller reporting the ESN as lost or stolen, I really wouldn't worry about that. I believe the ESN becomes your if you have it on your account and can show proof that you purchased the device from its previous owner. I'd also report the seller to eBay if they do that.

I bought my wife's Epic on ebay. Make sure that it has a clean esn. Make sure you read the sellers feedback. I bought from some one with excellent feedback that sells a lot of phones. You may not want to buy from some one that sells clothes and just happens to be selling a phone. Ask them if it is a refurb or brand new never touched. I prefer the brand new never touched phones myself.
I had an excellent experience buying the phone on ebay. It was exactly as listed and is perfect.
Good luck! READ FEEDBACK!

Just to add some balance, be wary of the guys who sell massive numbers of phones. They buy bulk lots of refurbed/returned phones that the providers/insurance don't want. There's no real testing of the phones, basically they turn them on and make sure they're not in rough cosmetic shape. I bought a 6700 several years ago from one of these guys. He had a replacement policy and was easy to deal with BUT after having to swap the phone 5 times, the time it took to ship back and forth was extremely frustrating. After that experience, I would only buy new in box or used from an individual selling his/her own phone and has a great reputation. I've also bought a few things off this boards classifieds with good success.

Bought my first epic on EBAY...continually locked up.... I brought the EBAY phone to Sprint and they exchanged it for another... I was lucky...usually when you buy an EBAY phone, activate it, and transfer insurance, Sprint says that the new phone won't be covered for 30 days...the tech at the repair store felt sorry for me (because of the price) and made the exchange before the 30 day period. It is 30 days at my location...check the policy at your location... I will never have a Sprint phone w/o FULL insurance!

hey there. i bought the samsung exclaim from ebay. it was brand new never used never opened and in original packaging. i didn't want to buy a used one.i wouldn't buy a used one unless your positive you have a clean esn and such. i use this phone for my 2nd line. the epic is my 1st line.

when i bought the exclaim on ebay i purchased a 2 year replacement plan for like 20 bux from something like squaretrade or something like that. i didn't wanna dig to find my paperwork.but im sure thats the name of it.and i do also have the sprint insurance as well. so far i have had 0 problems with the phone. just thought i would share that with ya.

but buying a cellphone from ebay was a good experience for me....
