Well it's happened. Apple Fans rejoice, the New Iphone has been introduced. C-Net has a nice play by play of the presentation here:

Steve Jobs introduces iPhone 4 at WWDC (live blog) | Apple - CNET News

As many of you have guessed, other than some interesting display and some very interesting gyroscope technology there really isn't a lot to the new Iphone that is not already being done by Android 2.2 and the latest batch of high end android phones. Before the fanboys jump down my throat, yes there are other interesting features of the phone, but most of the ones covered where service related and not really having to do with the phone itself. a Nice phone, don't get me wrong, but it is not the breakthrough that prior generations have been. It still remains highly encapsulated (both in physical and software terms) and while some technologies introduce definitely expand the functionality of the phone, it is not the leaps and bounds improvement that prior editions were, or that steve jobs continues to say it is. As I see it (from a consumer POV) this Iphone brings the platform in line with the latest batch of high end android phones more than anything. The Iphone continues to be better at some things, while android and it's devices are better at others, and as of today, neither is drastically better all around (Though I would say that Android has a slight edge on this point).

A nice phone indeed and it will appeal to Iphone fans a lot and to folks who prefer a device that you can just turn on and use right off the bat. If you like more flexibility and customization in your platform (as well as porn - sorry couldn't pass that one up ;)), then this is not the device for you. What I have to wonder now is, with the incredible pace at which android devices are advancing from a specs POV, I can't help but feel that in another 6 months even this new Iphone will be playing catch up to the latest batch of high end Android devices. Anyhoot, That's how I see it.

I love the screen, but not so keen on thin devices as a whole.

Interestingly, it seems apple add features as they go. The polish has been there from day one.
Android have a host of features, now just need to add the polish.

I'm happy to sit with my Desire for a while longer. I REALLY miss the games though :(

The new form factor is far less appealing to me. Oh well, not like it was ever really going to make its way to Verizon anyway. lol

I've been saying this for the longest. All of the iphone 4 "new" features have already been implemented on an Android phone and Steve Jobs act like they thought of it.

If just HTC managed to put the screen of a Desire into the body of a bigger Legend... There'd be no need for an iPhone 4. I still hope they get this idea some day.

It's got little to do with hardware - android has that covered.

It's the embarrassing app market that needs to be dealt with. It's a joke. Just go to appbrain and tell me you're not underwhelmed.

I never understood the guy that ported android to the iphone. I would have been more interested in the Evo hardware running iPhone apps.

The folks over at Droidlife put together this nice comparison chart. After looking at it, the new Iphone doesn't really look that superior, at least not by comparison to the droid incredible and definitely not the EVO. In fact it looks like it's caught up.

one interesting thing that I haven't seen anyone mention is the incentive the current Iphone owners have to stay. I was talking to a friend who is a hard core apple user. The guy has thousands of songs purchased from I tunes. Other than finding a converter (something he doesn't want to be troubled with), he is basically stuck because most of his music is in apple's format. The trouble of converting his library, as well as loosing most of his apps, is enough of an incentive to keep him on as an Iphone customer, even if the ATT service sucks.

BTW, did anyone catch what Jobs said about renewal customers who sign up for a new contract getting a new Iphone? what did he mean by that? Did hi mean that if you renew for 2 years you get a free new Iphone? If so that would surely be a hell of an incentive to stay on as a customer, despite the shitty service.

He probably worked out a deal with AT&T so that he can inflate the sales numbers even more just to say "Hey look, we have another winner!"
