Calendar app recommendations?

Is there a calendar app that does not require you to sync with an account and that can be set as the default calendar app? I don't want to sync my calendar with the cloud, and the Google calendar app won't even let me add events without first specifying an account to sync with.

The other problem I'm having is that every program that calls up a calendar app, calls up the Google calendar app since, apparently, it is the default even though Google calendar under app settings says no default is set. I have a couple of calendar apps that would otherwise meet my needs, but I cannot get them set as the default calendar app.

Basically, I'm looking for a replacement for Google calendar that does not require you to sync with the cloud.

I am running Android 5.1.1. Thanks in advance!

Many calendar apps allow you to specify "local" calendars (i.e. specific to that app) in addition to any cloud calendars. Business Calendar 2 and aCalendar were the first 2 I tried, and both let me add new local calendars to them.

I actually never have other programs call up a calendar app (nobody in my field sends event invites by email). So to test I just mailed a .ics file to myself and tried opening it with 2 different email apps. One (MailDroid) asked which app I'd like to open the ics file with (standard dialogue for when no default set), which then asked me which calendar I'd like to add it to. The other (AquaMail) instead asked which calendar I'd like to add it to and didn't open any calendar app (presumably it would therefore not be able to add it to a calendar app's local calendar). So I don't know why you are having this problem with Google Calendar.

That said, I don't have the Google Calendar app installed on my phone at all (haven't for 5 years). So a suggstion: if you don't want to use Google Calendar, and don't want to sync with the cloud at all, try disabling it. That should at least force other apps to ask what calendar app you wish to use instead. Otherwise, let us know what apps these are, as that might help someone find a solution.

Thank you so much for your reply. I downloaded aCalendar, but I had the same problem with it that I have with Google Calendar. I'm not sure how you got it to make a local calendar, but I couldn't.

However ... I did find a wonderful app in the Play store:

Offline Calendar

This allowed me to create a local calendar which then Google Calendar recognized. This is a great app that does just what I needed.

The reason that I needed a way to do this was that I have several agenda widgets that get their info from the default calendar which appears to be the Google calendar.

Thanks again for your reply!

Glad it's sorted :)

For the record, what I did with aCalendar was view the calendar list, then touch the 3-dot button at the top and select "new calendar (local)" from the menu.

Thanks. I have aCalendar version 1.5.1 and I don't have that option. Under view calendar list, if I touch the 3-dot button at the top right, I get just 2 options: Add account/sync and aCalendar store.

But now that I created a local calendar with the app above, the local calendar also shows up in aCalendar. Rarely have I found an app that does 100% what I need it to do, but that app does.
