Calendar - inputting text

I am strongly considering the HTC Incredible, however, when I was at Verizon yesterday and was experimenting with the calendar, I could only input text in portrait mode. This meant that the keyboard was compressed much more than in landscape mode and led to me making lots of mistakes.

I asked the sales person if the phone was supposed to allow you to type in landscape mode (as it does in other applications, such as the browser) and he said yes. He explained that the problem was that people have been using it so much that it isn't turning to landscape mode when you turn the phone like it should.

Somehow, I don't believe him because I found the same thing when entering contacts. Unfortunately for me, inputting text in portrait mode is unacceptable due to my fat thumbs. Is this the case? That is, can you only enter text in portrait mode within the calendar and contacts?

Just checked on my Desire (the Desire and Incredible are both running SenseUI).

I can't edit text in contacts or calendar in landscape mode, whereas I can in the browser.

Having said that, there are many keyboards in the market that might help with the typing issue.

When I first started playing with typing on the virtual keyboard I was extremely slow with a lot of mistakes, but within a week I managed to type a lot faster. I know someone else with the same phone who only uses the landscape keyboard but I almost exclusively used the portrait keyboard.

I have swype now though, so my tap-typing days are pretty much over.
