Calendar Sync Settings on the s7

ByeIOS

Newbie
I've been trying to get my s7's Google Calendar app synced nicely with my PC's online Google Calendar. I've been on the Google Calendar Help Forum and made a little progress but I'm still having problems. What's happening is:

I can put an event on my phone's calendar and tap refresh and it pops up on my PC's online version. If I don't tap refresh it seems to take ages (hours or even days!) to show on my PC version, if at all.

Going the other way, that is putting an event in my PC's online version of the calendar, I can tap refresh on my phone and it pops up on my phone but it will never pop up on my phone just by inputting it on my PC.

The person responding to me on the Google Calendar Help Forum has asked:

"Do you have any options set up on your phone that might set the sync to occur only at a certain time or only when using wi-fi?"

I don't know the answer to this. Can anyone help?

If there are sync settings, then I'd like to use them. If not I can always just tap refresh?

My s7 has all its updates and I'm running Windows 10 on my PC.

Yep. I totally empathize. This is my first Samsung and my previous Sony Xperias would sync the calendars within 5 min, even with auto sync off. I think one solution is to keep auto sync on, which I don't like because of battery drain. I installed calengoo which has a setting to auto refresh immediately upon starting the app or touching the widget. This however doesn't solve the situation when you add an event on the pc. I hope someone finds a way. I don't know why my Sony phones synced without problems.

Tudork, Thanks for your reply and empathy! Can you tell me how I keep auto sync on? I might give it a go to see how it works out and how the batteries hold up.

Pull down the quick settings and it looks like a circle made up from 2 curved arrows. With that on, all your apps will always connect to the Internet to push instant notifications.

Thanks for the reply Tudork.

I've enabled auto sync.

I have also contacted Samsung customer support. They told me that having power saving on was the problem. I've turned it off but unfortunately, it hasn't cured the problem of slow phone/PC calendar syncs. One thing that they did say was to install an app called greenfly, which is a third party power saving app. I've installed this as a way of managing power saving from apps.

Hopefully, someone will have cracked the issue of sluggish syncs and will post a reply.

My experience with calendar apps was to use only Google Calendar on both the phone and the PC.
sync is NOT instantaneous, it works on a schedule of roughly 10 minutes.

I tried all of the calendar apps on Play Store, none were reliable, until I went to Google only.

They always sync, just not instantaneously

Thanks for your reply AZgl1500. Interesting what you say. I have Google calendars on my phone and PC but I'm still getting this issue of long, absent and inconsistent syncing between the two. The response to syncing seems quite erratic. Sometime I can put an event in, on my phone for example, tap refresh and it pops up on my PC, instantaneously. At other times it doesn't. If I don't try and use the refresh facility, it may appear on my PC but is more likely not to or to take hours. The same unpredictable behaviour is shown in the other direction, when I go from PC to phone and click save.

I'm expecting a call from the Samsung helpline this morning so if the issue is Android based, I hope they may be able to find it. I'll post the results, even if they are embarrassingly simple!

egg on my face is an often experienced item around here :)
i have to admit to not tracking too often just when it syncs up, but it always seems to get sync'd up eventually.

I don't use the PC app, I only use the browser link to the Google Calendar if that helps any?

usually what I do is click the little icon on the top of Firefox that looks like a Google calendar icon. i have the 'addon' installed that places it there.

AZgl1500, thanks for your post. If I didn't ever want to risk an eggy face, I would never learn anything. It's always worth a go, I find!

I have just come off the phone from the Samsung technical team and they appear to have resolved the issue. The correct procedure for syncing, as I now understand it, is;

Phone to PC: [1] In the phone's calendar, tap the + symbol and create an event. [2] Check that the correct email address is selected. This is important as the phone will only connect to the PC if this is done [and was my eggy moment!]. [3] Tap the three dot menu on the top right hand of the phone's screen and tap refresh. The event should then show on the PC version of the calendar (subject to email/internet speed and connection).

PC to phone: [1] In the PC's online calendar, create an event and save it. [2] Tap refresh on the phone and the event from the PC should appear, subject again to email/internet speed.

For both of the procedures above, they are activated by tapping refresh on the phone. You can of course just set up auto sync on your phone which will do the phone to PC thing automatically, according to the auto sync time you put in settings. However, I don't think that this works in the opposite direction, PC to phone, as there doesn't appear to be any auto sync settings on my PC version. Does anyone know different? Can you set up an auto sync from the Google on line calendar to your phone?

Auto sync should be set in the phone's settings to the desired length of time. I chose the shortest, which is 15 minutes.

I'm now going to use this system for a few days and see how it works. I have been using the on line calendar so I may investigate the Google Calendar app, which presumably you can download and use if you are offline? Don't see any other advantages, unless they are very different products?

The Samsung rep also said that the on-board phone power saving setting would slow down the sync process. I've had conflicting advice from Samsung reps on this. One saying that the third party greenfly power saving app worked better than the on-board Samsung one and the other rep saying third party apps should not be recommended by their reps. I have greenfly now but it's difficult to say if it's better than the Samsung version.

Hopefully, problem solved!

good info, i have done it that way sometimes, most times though, i just click inside the calendar at the appropriate time slot.... with what you just said, I think I shall make a point to use the 'create an event' method instead.

I have Auto Sync turned off on everything, makes the battery last longer. and now that I am retired, 15 minutes or an hour doesn't really effect me... and when in doubt, I have always used the 'refresh' button anyway.

good point on always 'refreshing' from the phone side of things... will have to remember that.
I use the Google Calendar app simply because it is on the phone and i don't need the Internet to make new entries. as I always have the Internet turned off when the screen is locked, using the calendar 'online' would create a delay.

using the app, i always have the latest info stored in the app... then when I unlocked the phone and view the calendar it syncs up then... the minor delay does not bother me.

EDIT: my laptop's left shift key is wonky lately, hate that.... not anxious about replacing the keyboard on it either....

Thanks for the very useful info! However, can someone please explain where to find sync settings so the calendars sync on a schedule? I couldn't find the 15 min sync anywhere on the phone (not in settings, accounts, or in S Planner or in the Google calendar app). Please help!
