Just tried this out myself and noticed the same thing... Not really sure why though.

Perhaps trying a different dialer aside from stock?

Welcome to Android then! I'm sure as you adjust you'll find if you don't like something about the phone, there is almost always something you can change it to. Keyboards, dialers, SMS applications, etc.
