what phone? if you have root on the nexus one there is. if you have droid, root isnt necessary.

Its a HTC Desire, all it came up with was apps that turn the screen into a torch not the led flash.

There must be one somewhere, I even had one on my 5800 that could do this and was also a strobe light aswel!

Try Torch app from the Market?

Careful playing with LED bro, long time usage it can burn your LED and also it will shorten your battery life faster than screen.

I know of Glowing Pear which was written for the Galaxy but may work on your phone, and MomentFlash which was obviously written for the Moment but works fine on my Galaxy. Try those?

Glowing Pear just shines the flash for as long as the app is open; MomentFlash works as both an app and a widget to manually toggle the flash on or off.

nope, neither of them work.
i would like the LED to work as a torch because it is obviously brighter then just the screen and i won't be using it for long periods so battery life would not be affected too much.

I also would like this, it used to be easy to do on my old phones with a camera, something like press the hash key to always illuminate the flash.

I was a little disappointed when I couldn't find "Flash: Always on" in the camera settings.

I'm sorry to hear that. Apps usually query the phone to find out which features are available; these apps probably aren't aware of the newest phone models that are now out there. You might want to try contacting the developers to ask for an update, this should be a trivial change (if the app is coded sensibly ).

Which is why they have two brightness settings; one for lighting the subject while the autofocus works, and one BRIGHT one for actually taking the photo.
The first one can be used for several minutes at a time, I know this from personal experience. Glowing Pear has this really Papparazzi-ish feature that it flashes the flash when you tap the screen, but you can't have that brightness level permanently.
