Camera issues (maybe)

I have found an issue with camera on my S7… maybe its settings, but could be a bug, and the issues may be related.
SM-G930F
running 6.0.1

Firstly … if I set it to save as RAW file (my preference) … I can do this OK, via camera>mode/Pro>settings
However, if you exit camera … when you next go into camera it has defaulted to standard mode & jpeg
Can it be set it to ‘lock to RAW mode’ (and ideally PRO mode) even if via a different shortcut.

Secondly .. in camera>settings I have Storage Location set as SD card.
However any pictures taken in RAW mode are saved in device storage ….. this is a particular issue as RAW files are larger and I would much prefer the SD card space for this.
 
It seems it is a bug ......... now gotta hope they fix it in s/w release
I'll log it with Samsung support - not that I expect that to help much.
 
It will be interesting if there is an app which converts the raw files into high quality jpegs.

The stock camera app jpegs are over-saturated and over-sharpened. I tried another app which I have used on the S6 for ages - Camera FV5 - and that can fix the over-saturation but raw doesn't work on it. And it has a bug in the sharpening setting so that doesn't work. Another app I tried doesn't work at all on the S7.

Ideally a 3rd party camera app should offer high quality jpegs. Unfortunately, in Android, all the camera apps are just control panels onto the camera API so they all have basically the same capability, and even a "100% quality jpeg" is already over-saturated and over-sharpened by the phone OS.
 
Wouldn't want that - you have it as standard ....that is what software does - process and compress to jpeg.
RAW is much better as you have control over all aspects of the picture ..
I would agree standard jpeg are over saturated but this is a general move ... many 'phone' users seem to go for HDR or 'vivid mode' pictures.
Not sure they are over sharpened though
 
A working 3rd party app is needed. If you zoom right in, you can see a lot of "unsharp mask" sharpening. This also makes jpeg files much bigger and does so needlessly. Unsharp mask should be used only at the final resolution used in the document or web page.

Also one needs to do something about the colours.
 
Another reason why straight fwd RAW is better option.
I use Lightroom and sharpen & Denoise are always the very last steps of workflow.

Exactly, these steps are always followed up in another app after the shot has been composed and taken if you want that final professional touch. Even DSLR shots usually need to be edited, to make perfect.
 
I have raised my 2 points as official support tkt with Samsung - 'maybe' we can get it resolved in a s/w release.
Suggest anyone else who wants to use raw does the same
