Camera Problems

I'm having big problems trying to take photos when the lighting isn't just right. A typical situation is where the subject is in front of a lighter background but there isn't much light on her face. Ordinarily I could use the flash to light up a face. I can set the flash to go off, take the photo and observe that the flash did go off. However, the photo looks like no flash was used. The subject's face is still very dark. The subject was close enough to the camera that it should have worked. My videos, however, look great in the same conditions.

Do you all have similar problems? Is something the matter with my camera? Or would a different camera work better.

The fill in flash ought to work

Are you sure your flash is firing? You need to set the flash to always on and NOT auto: if you set it to auto it probably won't fire because the camera will see enough light from the background.

Thanks for answering.

Yes, I do have the flash set to always go off. I've also seen it go off. That's why I'm so baffled. The photos look like there is no flash at all. I'm not positive about this, but I think that this used to work, but has now stopped. I wonder if the timing is off - like the flash is not firing in sync with the shutter. It's the only thing I can think of.

Does your phone work like it should in this regard?

I checked my settings and my metering was set to center-weighted. In checking that, I think I learned something, though. I learned that I should be paying attention to where that rectangle guideline was on the screen - because I'm assuming that it marks the spot for focusing and light metering. I also figured out that I could move the rectangle by touching a different spot on the screen. Seems like something I should have known - but didn't. I think I need a class on the ins and outs of using the camera.

Thanks for your help.

I don't think moving the rectangle does anything for this phone. I never had any luck with it although it has worked on other phones.
