CamScanner full version

UncleMike

I've been so impressed with the support I have received for the free version of CamScanner that I decided to buy the full version, even though the free version has been meeting my needs. While it's nice to have the "...IntSig.com" tag line removed from the PDF files now, I have a couple of issues that are bothering me:

1. A second icon (for the full version) now appears in my app drawer. I had the same problem with Droid Scan when I briefly had the paid version. This is easily remedied with LauncherPro's ability to hide apps, but it's still annoying. I'm not an Android programmer, but imagine there is a way for the developer to avoid this.

2. Both the free version and the full version now load, when I load either app from the app drawer. This seems like a terrible waste of resources, especially on my (dare I say, measly?) Droid. Once the app is opened, I get two apps running (according to System Panel Lite): CamScanner at 10.8MB, and CamScanner Full Version at 8.4MB. Again, I imagine there must be a better way.

In summary, I was happy with the free version, but am disappointed with the paid version. Are these common issues with paid "upgrades" to free apps?

CamScanner has been the only paid app, of the few I've upgraded from free version, that has done this. I have 2 icons in the app drawer, but only the one version ever opens. Wondering what would happen if the free version were to be uninstalled? I haven't bothered to try it -
I'm confident this is just a minor glitch - CamScanner is a most impressive and useful application.

I received an odd response from their support:
...in current version, both icons are point to same app, that means CamScanner is loaed only once at any time.

But I clearly have two processes loaded in memory: com.intsig.camscanner, and com.intsig.lic.camscanner.

As a test, I uninstalled the free version and opened the license version. It displays a notice saying you have to download the main application. The only option on screen is a "download" button, which opens the Market app with a search for "pname:com.intsig.camscanner".

Note: be careful if you do this - though the files don't get deleted from the SD card, previous scans no longer appear in CamScanner.

As a second test, I reinstalled CamScanner (free) and removed the full version. After restarting the phone it functioned just like the free version did previously - it displayed a "lite" banner, and added the tag line at the bottom of the PDF files it generates.

I don't see how any developer would consider this an acceptable way for an app to work. It's strange that they don't seem to know how their own apps (intentionally plural) work.

Another thing I find strange (but I've seen it elsewhere) - in order to upload to Google Docs, CamScanner wants my account credentials. There is a way for apps to access my account without knowing my credentials, by using a token, which I authorize. Since I don't upload scans to Google Docs, this doesn't really bother me, but it's more evidence of non-optimal programming.

All that said, for all I know, there are reasons for doing things the way they've been done, and I might do the same if I were a developer. Also, I have no plans to stop using the app or re-look at the alternatives - CamScanner is a great app that I keep finding more uses for.

I just thought I would point out that as a result of installing an Android 2.3.2 ROM on my Droid, the CamScanner License did not re-install automatically with the other apps after I finished flashing the ROM. It turned out that CamScanner License doesn't appear in the Market with my new ROM installed.

I contacted the developer and after I provided the necessary information, they gave me a key, as if I had purchased from their web site. This worked great, and I really appreciate their fast response over the weekend. But what I really want to point out here is that this method of upgrading to the paid version DOES NOT result in an additional icon in the app drawer, and DOES NOT result in an additional process in memory when loading CamScanner.

For anyone considering upgrading, I would recommend buying direct from their site instead of via the Market.

I tried to determine the advantages of upgrading to full version and cannot find a list anywhere. Can anyone tell me?

They claim that the free version has a limited number of pages and/or documents, but in the months that I used it before upgrading I never came across this limit.

One thing I can confirm is that the "Intsig.com" footer that appears at the bottom of every PDF page on the free version does not appear in the paid version.

Since I occasionally use CamScanner to send scans to customers while I'm on a job site I consider the elimination of the footer to be worth the money. But the real reason I upgraded was that I was thoroughly impressed with their support and though they deserved some compensation.

Does the Enhance feature work well for you guys?

I turned it off because while it works fine on a few documents (large text it seems), most of the time it creates a reddish glow around text and makes it fuzzy.

I've had mixed results with it. Right now I have it set to "low", but will sometimes change it to "no enhance". I've never had much luck with "high".

I purchased the full version license for the camscanner. How do I know if the licensee has been applied. I do not see any additional icon. What step I have to take additionally. How to know if Camscanner is now full version?

Just go into the Android Market> my apps and see if it is there. If so, you've got it. (If I remember correctly, you don't have to do anything.)
