can a 3000mAh portable charger charge a 1500mAh battery?

Hi,
I'm using a LG Optimus 2X phone and the battery is a 1500mAh battery. I'm intending to get a portable charger but these portable chargers are usually 3000mAh or 2200mAh. Will it do any damage if I plug a 3000mAh portable charger to charge a 1500mAh battery?
 
mAh refers to the capacity of the two batteries, not that one puts out more power than the other. So that just means the 3000mAh charger will be able to charge your phone twice :)

That's actually not quite correct. The charger needs to convert the battery voltage (normally around 3.7v) up to 5 volts for the phone; therefore the effective capacity is reduced by the fraction of 3.7/5. When you take into account the inefficiencies of the electronics you will probably get about 1 1/3 charges.
 
The portable chargers are useless. I bought one 2 months back. It is not working now.
Better to buy an extra bettery (Buy only original batteries). I think an extra bettery is cheaper than a portable charger.

Hi! I have bought recently portable charger 3000mah, input and output DC 5v~1000Ma
My phone has 1450 mah, so i thought it would be enough to charge it fully twice, but in reality it is enough for one full charge :(
I have iphone 4s, i know it is android forum, but anyway
Can you explain why?
 
As posted above, with voltage convertion there is just 80% capacity of portable charger's battery pack available for your phone.

While charging, your phone needs power for stand-by, so in my experience, you'll have just 65% capacity.

And by industrial standards for batteries is +/- 20% tolerance admitted with capacity.

So, your portable charger might have just 45% of its 3000mAh available for to charge your phone ;)

I had a car breakdown on me once. Therefore, I think all cars are junk and everyone should buy an extra pair of shoes. Shoes are cheaper than cars.

You see how that line of reasoning, and over-generalization is flawed.

I bought an extra battery for my last phone. Now that I've moved onto another model, that extra battery is now useless. I've determined that it is cheaper to buy a quality portable charger that can be used on mine AND my wife's phone, and I can use it even when I get a different phone. Plus, I don't have to shut down my phone to swap out batteries.

This one is the most highly rated charger on Amazon.

That's right, i got a Ravpower rp-pb03 5600mah external battery charger, the output voltage is 5V/ 1A. it can triple charge my phone. Performs Great! my phone's battery is 1450mah.
