Can power saving apps control GPS ?

Is it possible to control the GPS with a power management application?
I have just started playing with power savings applications, and the two that I tried couldn

The option is not there because it would be pointless. GPS is only active and drawing power when an app in use requires it. You can disable GPS altogether in settings but it really won't save power.

Some can - look at Greenpower. It's not a big contributor to power drain though, so do it for convenience, not because of expectations that your battery will last longer between charges.

Guys,

Thanks, I will try greenpower even if I likely wont save much from control of the GPS. I will say this though, since I was updated to Kitkat, I notice that my phone is very often using the GPS to locate itself even if I am not using any application to do so (I see the GPS icon in the task bar come and go frequently).

I have a lot of widgets (which I am trying to eliminate to save power), and one of them is likely trying to get a location (likely the weather widget).

Thanks.....

So go into the widget settings and get it to 'check location' less frequently. I mean, most days most people don't go very far and the weather that is displayed at 8am for the day will not be that inaccurate that it'll spoil your day.

Doctor, thanks for the feedback on the rooting. I wont be rooting my phone anytime soon so I will just have to do without the control of GPS from my power savings app. I found that "sprint connection optimizer" appeared to responsibile for the frequent GPS use, so I turned the optimizer off.

Dave, I got rid of my weather channel widget becasue it dint have the ability to change the update frequency (or at least I couldnt figure out how to change it). I replaced it with two others (noaa and accuweather) for which I was able to change the update rate.

Thanks ....

All,

I have tremendously incresed my battery life by unistalling power hungry apps (most I havent been using anyway), as well as disabling the "sprint connections optimizer" (which was using the GPS a lot), and by adding LEANDROID, a simple app to shut off mobile and wireless when screen is off.

Thanks everyone....

And LeanDroid can now control GPS (with root) :) I'm the developer.
