Can anyone recommend a good set of headphones?

Long story short, I need a good set of high quality over the head headphones. I don't mind paying a little extra for extra quality, but I honestly don't know where to start looking. Can someone recommend a pair?

Not sure on price range. I want something quality. I know there are some really good ones that are $1700 or so. Obviously I don't want to spend that much. I do want something quality and I don't mind paying for it, but nothing insane.

Not sure what you mean by type. I wasn't aware there were different types of headphones. I don't want earbuds. I want the over the head type headphones since they seem to be better than earbuds overall IMO.
 
If your just kinda starting out you probably want to stick to under $200. Anything more then that you are not going to see much difference without then purchasing an amp.

Dont get wireless and don't get ones with buttons that turn on some kinda noise canceling nonsense.

Headphones closed:
Sennheiser hd25-1 II $200 <----- these are generally considered one of the best pair of budget headphones you can find. Great design too, portable.

ATH-M50 $150 <------- close race with HD25-1 IIs. Different kinda sound, less "analytical" or "technical" sounding. They are bulky as hell tho.

HD-555 $80? <------ Comfortable, pretty decent if your just wanting something that sounds better then like $20-$50 pair from like Sony.

Headphones open:

Grado SR225i $200 <--- Never used personally cause I dont like open ear headphones, but I have never heard anyone say much bad beside there is tons of sound leakage (But they are open ear... so it is to be expected.)

Grado SR80i $100 <--- ditto but a tier lower quality wise.

Really good pair of earphones that just came out that you may consider:
Shure SE215 $100 <----- If you like balanced low/mid/high this will be the best earphone you can get in the $1-200ish range

There are the ones that go totally over your ears, so nobody can see your ears, and then there are the ones that just sit on your ear, like earmuffs. Really the only good thing about the latter is in hot climates, it gets less sweaty, and if your in some kinda situation where you need to hear whats actually going on around you.
 
I'll be using them purely inside while making feeble attempts to run a PA system. The ones that go over my ears are really what I'm looking for as I want something that will block out everything else and let me focus on just the one or two channels I'm piping into them.

Well if your willing to spend the $200, I would get the HD25-1 IIs. If you take care of them, they will last a long time; they will also be one of the best sets you can get without needing and amp to bring to the max potential.

I'll be in the back of the building and my main job is to make the thing sound decent for everyone else in the crowd. I don't know how much I'll actually need them. I do appreciate the recommendation. I think I'm going to stick that model number in my Amazon basket to buy later and I'll stash $200 away in case I do find that I need them. There is a pair there, but they're very, very, very old. If I find I never need them, I'll use them. I'll go with your recommendation if I need to use the headphones all the time.
 
There's plenty of spare parts about for the HD25 aswell so if they ever break they'll be easily fixed,pro DJ's use them and they're built like a rock,will last you ages.;)

I use Audio Technica ATH-ES7 but purely for portable cans.
 
I use a set of sony mdr-7509HD for monitors while I dj and I really like them alot. $219 right now through guitar center
 
HD205s for sure, I use them every day at the radio station and at home for my bass... one of the best sets of headphones I've ever used
 
Head-Fi is a great source, as linked above. I like in ear phones (take getting used to, do cancel out outside sound, if that is what you like, for mowing lawn, etc, also great sound. On ear Koss Porta Pro can't be beat for the bucks ($35-45, depending on discounts), light, portable, surprisingly good bass. I like the MonsterTurbine and Turbibe Pro Copper for in ear, Etymotic Research makes nice ones (that can also come with mic for iphone and the like). I have Audio-technica ATH-A700, nice sound (with an amp), find they are not comfortable for long (and get hot), they are fully enclosed. Open back may be better in this regards, don't have any of these yet. Back to in ear, have found the Denon's underappreciated and often discounted (have the AHC-751K-very nice sounding); their over ear phones are also highly regarded (haven't heard them myself). There's tons more, you can spend your life (and life savings) at Head-Fi and related sites.

Im on my fourth pair in the last eight years or so. They last and sound hella good. Theyre quality without the price.

I listen to everything. Jazz, metal, rap, hip hop, blues, classic rock...etc.
