Can I add contacts without them showing up in gmail?

I am going to be an Android owner soon (HTC Incredible) but one thing I am concerned about is the privacy of my phone contacts. I heard that Android phones will automatically backup your phone contacts to gmail. I would prefer not to have my phone contacts anywhere but on my phone.

How can I ensure that contacts I add to my phone do not get synced to gmail or other online service?

No luck on the link. I get the following error:

Thanks...

Quite simple really. You have 3 kinds of contacts on Android phones SIM, Phone and Google. SIM is obviously contacts stored on your sim card. Phone are contacts only stored on the phone and Google are contacts synced with Google. So if you setup your contacts as Phone contacts they will not be synced.
