can I block read receipt

I Have a verizon galaxy s3. I just received a text and asked me if I wanted to send read confirmation. I hit cancel. My question is, does that revent sender from seeing when I read it or is there a way to block incoming read receipts? I don't want this sender to know when I read my text.
