Can I Download and Save Maps to My G1?

I'm trying to use my G1 as my GPS device when i go hiking.
Since i will hit many spots outside of tower coverage, i am wondering if there is a way to download maps and save them to my phone, so that my GPS location will not be a blue dot amidst a sea of gray boxes.

Is there any way for this? Google maps and AndNav both download stuff temporarily, correct? they won't show any maps if they can't locate Edge or 3G network.

Well....using regular full size Google Maps you can make your own maps so that you could review a hiking path or save a map, but without "any" data signal you pose a good question...could you log in and see them...simple answer: no.

My best guess at how to do this...screen capture a few versions of the map on your pc, save them to your sd card as images, and then use the picture viewer to explore your images.

Not super sexy but doable.

i am hoping that there is a solution to this problem a bit further down the line. i have a tomtom for my car (with American maps), but i wouldnt mind also having some American maps on my phone next time i am on holiday there, and i certainly wont be using a data connection while roaming

AndroidForums sister site, Phandroid has been reporting a GPS app is in the works, so that might solve some of these issues if you can somehow pre-plot, go into airplane mode and still review.

I know some apps haven't thought about a user's wish to see saved info whilst in airplane mode. Gasbot for example, seems to only work with GPS enabled.

that sounds good. i will be going to the states in July and i think i will revert back to my windows mobile phone for that trip (espeically after T-Mobiles lackluster response to turning off all data problem).
but it is good to hear that possible options are being thought of when your phone does not have a data connection

or

just stop robbing everyone with massive data roaming charges and then we wouldnt have to worry about it in the first place
