can I get 1.6 on htc hero? or should I just get another model?

Hi there, I got me a spangly new samsung galaxy, then I found out that I need android 1.6 to use pptp vpn (which is essential to me), then I found out that there won't be a 1.6 on the galaxy. I'm looking into ways of fixing this but it doesn't look likely.

Anyway, I still have another week to return it so I'm looking at alternatives. My first favourite was the motorla dext (then I found it's also 1.5) then my next choice is the htc hero, guess what? Also 1.5

However it seems that there are more options for the hero, can it be easily upgraded to 1.6? I've also seen some hacks such as the cyanogenmod, can I use this on the hero?

Or should I just go for the tattoo or the magic? These seem to have a lower spec than the hero but at least they come with 1.6. am I right? Am I talking out of my ass?
 
The Hero currently has 1.5 but will get 2.1 later in the year, hopefully soon. HTC will skip 1.6 for the Hero but have it on the Tattoo. The Motorola Droid/Milestone has 2.0 already.
 
ah, the milestone, secret fourth option D. After some hoking about I've found a nice deal for the milestone that'll cost about the same and with only an 18 month contract, I'm having that and it's bye-bye samsung.

the hero (sprint) is IMO the best droid ph out. I love it cuz of flash and multi-touch amongst other things.
