Help Can I limit phone unlocking retries?

Hello,

I am using fingerprint method to unlock my phone and occasionally and android will ask me to unlock phone by pattern lock. I am using Samsung Note 8 fingerprint lock and I need to set a pattern lock too.

I want to prevent other people from unlocking my phone with unlimited pattern tries if they got my phone. I want to limit the pattern unlock to 1 or 2 or 3 attempts and the phone will request the user to wait 10 mins for another pattern unlock attempt. How to limit pattern unlock tries and how set a delay time to try pattern unlock again?

Thanks.

Unless Samsung are different from others there is no option to control this (and while they change Android a lot I've never heard any suggestion that they differ in this respect). I would however expect the phone to institute some sort of timeout after repeated incorrect attempts: I just tried it with my Pixel and got a short timeout after 5 incorrect attempts, and would expect that that might become longer if I keep getting it wrong (I didn't feel like testing further).

Behaviour when incorrect PINs or patterns are entered is something that has varied between devices and software versions, so I cannot guarantee that what happens with one phone is what will happen with another.

As we are talking about a basic part of Android's security I'd think there would be no way you could change this unless you started from the open source AOSP and built your own ROM from that. Whether there is a third party lockscreen app you could use in addition which might give you additional options I don't know, but such a thing would be an addition, so would presumably add inconvenience for you every time you unlocked.

In addition to @Hadron 's post, I want to add that a friend of mine once asked for something similar.

I searched through F-Droid, and only came up with a few apps- all of which were very outdated, and did not function correctly on a modern device.

Another drawback was that the apps could be set to (or were predisposed to) delete all data from the device after a set number of failed unlocking attempts.

I only searched for such an app on F-Droid, as it would seem very advisable to use an open source app for such a function.

I only download all apps from Playstore, not sure about other app stores.

May I know is F-Droid safe, why choose F-Droid instead of playstore? What is the difference between apps in Playstore, F-Droid and Samsung Galaxy Store? Thanks.

Samsung used to have the option to erase the phone information after something like 10 incorrect tries. I had this set in Android 9 and I no longer see this function.
