Android Question

Hi there
I have a 7-inch Android tablet using Jellybean. I'm new to Android, and have only ever really used Windows or my iPhone before, so I'm a little ignorant about what Android can do.
I use iTunes as a music player, because I have an iPhone and iPod as well. I store most of my music files on a portable external hard-drive so as to avoid draining the memory of my HP laptop, and I've set my iTunes up so the library syncs to the external hard drive as well.
My question is: can I hook up my external hard drive to my Android tablet via USB/mini USB connector and play the files? How would I view the files on my hard drive using my Android tablet - and is there a way to make them into a playlist or is it just all random files? Basically, is there an Android equivalent of iTunes and can I make it work with my tablet?
Really appreciate any help!
