Help Can I remove/hide the "New" section in contacts?

Whenever a new contact is added to my device, it shows up in a pinned "New" group in the Contacts list. First of all, I find this really pointless, and the only way to clear it is to open/view the new contact.

Not a big deal, I suppose, but lately I've had to factory reset my device a few times and after restoring my data all of my contacts show up in a "New" group. All of them. The only way I can find to clear them from this group is to open/view each individual contact one at a time. Incredibly tedious.

Is there any way to just disable/hide/remove the "New" group altogether? As mentioned before, it's a completely useless "feature" anyway. At the very least, is there any way to clear all the contacts from the group at once?

Thanks!

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I do have a rooted device, so a solution requiring root would be fine.
