I used Kingo ROOT to root my tablet. Can I now uninstall the app and keep the tablet rooted? Or does Kingo ROOT need to stay installed to keep it rooted?

I think the actual app that you downloaded to root the device can be deleted without loosing root. The other things that were installed into the system to obtain and manage root are a different story.
Look at Super- Sume pro at the Play Store. Depending if your device is supported, will replace Kingo user with SuperSu and all other Kingo files and keep root.

Yes, I deleted it last night. I also downloaded another app that removes bloatware and removed a heap of stuff. I factory reset it last night and it is still rooted and none of the apps I deleted came back. All good!
