Can I set this X... ...zZ screen?

Every so often when i open my phone, it shows a screen with this:

X... ...zZ

I have to swipe the zZ's to the left to open the phone. Once I do this it is fine for the day. I am assuming this is a sleep mode, but I can't find any info on it. Today, whenever I opened my phone, it was there. It didn't cause a problem, but I don't know why it keeps going to this mode. I believe when its in this mode, I won't hear a tone to notify me of incoming texts, though. Does anyone have info on this screen or app?

It's the lock screen and it keeps people out of your phone. (You can set it to require that you put in a password or a "pattern".) You'll still get notifications of calls and texts if you have ringtones for them.
