Can I use my phone as an access card?

Hello,

I have a i727 Galaxy SII Skyrocket, and I want to use it as an access card. Is there an application to copy my RFID access card and somehow use that information to open the gates at my apartment complex with my phone?

Thanks

RFId is the tag being read by the scanner or reader. I am almost 100% sure that a tag is always a physical entity. I don't think you can copy that into software. The only chance would be NFC.

The only path I think of for helping you to find this answer is contacting the company that developed the security system in use.

Hi thanks for the response. That's what I was wondering about, if the NFC capability of my phone could read the code or signal from the card and then somehow broadcast it using the NFC feature to activate the gate locks. I really don't know what I'm talking about, but if I could do this it would be very convenient.

wouldn't it be a major security problem, if anyone who walked past you could upload the signal from your RFID card, and save it to their phone?

(best just leave all the doors and gates unlocked ;) )

lol I wish they would leave all the gates unlocked!! I am in a gated apartment block with thousands of others and we are given 2 access cards per household. I need a couple more, but I would need to pay $20 per card. just trying to save a little cash, and add some convenience.

I can see how it could be made to work by the rfid company who makes the systems, although them doing so would offer up huge security holes.
Leaving the option for super easy access to hackers or thieves.
They would just need an app to try and get in that would retrieve all acceptable *codes* and use one at random.
I don't see how a phone would make it more convenient.
If they could get past the easy security holes in development, it would be cool though.

I think the biggest issue is that every instance of RFId that I can think of is a physical entity (the reader) reading another physical entity (the tag). So, in theory he could cut the readable part of the card out and tape it to the back of his phone or case. That would work for RFId, but would probably cause some interference with the antennas in his phone - as the RFId tag has an antenna of its own.

If NFC can be used to respond to the pings from the reader, this would work. But that would only be through the company that designs the system.
