Can phones explode? Are they safe to use?

I just got a message from a friend saying that someones oppo phone exploded and that guy injured his hand badly. Are such things true? How does it happen? How to prevent it?

Faulty phones can ignite (anyone who was around last year knows that ;)), though "explode" is hyperbole. I'd never take an individual Internet report as gospel, but the general principle that a faulty phone can be a fire hazard is real.

How to avoid? Don't use the phone if there's any sign of the battery swelling (in a sealed device the first sign would be the device coming apart). Manufacturers often blame third-party chargers, and while I'm sure there's an element of buck-passing there it may be prudent to avoid the cheapest and nastiest charging accessories (I don't accept the "only use the manufacturer's charger" line, that's pure BS). And don't get things out of proportion: apart from the Note 7 there are typically a handful of reports per year out of the billions of phones in use.

Explode and go off like TNT or something, probably not. I think "explode" was used by the tabloids because it sounds more sensational than say "catch fire". A phone or anything with a LiPo battery can certainly go up in flames, like could be because of faulty manufacturing.

...which is what I'd expect it to look like.

The Oppo in the aboved posted fake news story with the twisted open back, quite frankly looks like someone did that deliberately with pair of pliers or large screwdriver something.

FAKE!!!

Hmm, wonder whether someone damaged their phone and then tried to cover it up? That doesn't look remotely like a battery fire or even a battery explosion (if such things ever happened).

Not all claims should be taken at face value. Anyone else remember the Galaxy S3 that was supposed to have "spontaneously ignited", then turned out to have been put in a microwave to dry it out?
