Root Can Rooting affect signal strength?

Hi guys

Just got my first LTE phone (Nexus 5) on Sprint and I'm trying to figure out if my rooting the phone somehow messed up my reception of the LTE signal.

I rooted my Nexus 5 immediately when I got home from Sprint store, so I didn't have a chance to see how well the unrooted phone works. However, I did have an LTE signal at the Sprint store.

Now I'm getting terrible signal strength, 1-2 bars on 3G. No LTE to speak of.

Incidentally, I live in a very central area of Los Angeles, zip code 90048, and LTE is supposedly widely available here.

Phone rooted with TWRP recovery. First custom rom I installed was Beanstalk 4.4. When I noticed weak signals on Beanstalk, I decided to try Carbon Rom, and am experiencing the same thing. 1-2 bars of 3G, no LTE at all.

I tried updating PRL and System Update, with no results. I've made LTE my preferred network.

Any advice would be immensely appreciated.

Thanks!

Did the custom roms had the same APN settings as stock? You could be using a preset that doesn't work well with your network.

Root by itself won't affect signal strength. Thats all in your radios, which isnt touched by rooting or flashing ROMS.

I'd recommend doing a PRL followed by a profile update. If that doesn't work, you may be in an area of the city where towers are being worked on. I'd try going back to the area of the sprint store and see if you can pick up the signal again.

I am also on Sprint, and haven't had issues connecting to LTE on any ROM.

Turns out the problem was simply my inexperience with Sprint's LTE network (this is my first 4G phone).

In my apartment, the signal was terrible. But once I took my phone out and about, I got some *blazingly* fast speeds, upwards of 25 Mbps (which is over double what I get on my cable broadband connection at home... Just incredible!)

I live in Long Beach (90814) and have T-Mobile.

In my apt the signal is 'meh'... 1-2 bars of LTE, and maybe 5-10Mbps, but no worries as I have a nice internet connection via wireless.

I tried Speedtest near the Traffic Circle in LB, since I had 4 bars of LTE:

Ping: 67ms
Download: 55.30 Mbps
Upload: 19.61 Mbps

Just WOW :)
