can someone explain "rooting"

hi, i read alot of posts and i see people talking about "rooting" their
device. i may be out of the loop or something, but i have no idea
what this means. i am guessing it has something to do with getting
deep into the software, but that's a guess.
can someone in simple terms explain what rooting is, and why or
why not a person would want to do it.

Good question Buckeyedroid, everyone seems to tell HOW to Root, but I haven't been able either to find out WHAT Rooting is. What does it do, what does it not do. Does it make it so you can't do normal OS Updates? If Rooted, when you update to a newer OS version, must you ROOT again and so on.

How about guys n gals, What is ROOTING please.

ROOT = the user name or account that by default has access to all commands and files on a Linux or other Unix-like operating system. It is also referred to as the root account, root user and the superuser.
