I own a non-rooted Motorola E XT1022 running Android KitKat 4.4.4. I have noticed a very large number of files named:
.storage_marker__number_1
on my external SD card. In other words, their full path would be:
/storage/sdcard1/.storage_marker__number_1
where number looks timestamp-related. A filename example:
/storage/sdcard1/.storage_marker__1429517316303_1
There's always at least one file for every single day since 12/13/2014 when I bought this phone and the SD card, but their number varies from day to day. I have attached a screenshot of the file manager showing some of them.
I Googled quite extensively about these files, but couldn't find a description of their function, and whether they can be safely removed. So, my doubts are:
I'll appreciate any info or pointers to info you can give me.

- What is the function of files .storage_marker* on the external SD card of an Android KitKat device ?
- Can they be safely removed ?
