Can unlocked phones be "re-locked" if you update android version?

So my G2 should be coming in the mail today and im still confused about the best way to upgrade it to 4.4 kit kat. Im sure the phone will have an ATT sim card in it, i was going to just use that to upgrade to kit kat because i wont have my cricket sim until i set up my account today and they mail it to me.

But here is my question, i came across this youtube video and in the comments section was this:

Hi Mr chris I own an unlocked d800 and I want to ask you would this update (using computer ) relock the sim again ? Thx in advance

And then the poster of the video answers:
To my knowledge, you will have to do the SIM unlock again

Is he correct in saying upgrading android will re-lock your phone? Should i wait for my cricket sim to come to update to 4.4?

Thanks.

Welp good news guys, the phone came updated to 4.4.2 out of the box lol. Odd because all listings showed it as being on 4.2.2, ill take it!

No, the lock shouldn't ever come back.. Not even with a factory reset.. The lock should be BIOS level of the phone

You could however loose root with an update though!! But not Sim lock

I guess it could be software level on some phones but not sure.. My moto g was still unlocked even after a factory reset

Phones don't have BIOS they have a bootloader.

Factory data reset doesn't affect it. Ever.

The effects of an OTA update on rooted phone can absolutely affect the bootloader.

The answer is model dependent.

On some, once you unlock the bootloader and root it, it's a terrible idea to take an OTA.

Sim lock and bootloader lock are independent and completely separate.

Hope this helps.

Haha your correct BIOS was a very bad use or words.. With that being said, all I was trying to get across is that a sim lock is much deeper than a factor reset would go.. So with an update or factory reset you shouldn't lose a sim unlock
