Can we disable App update notifications, but not the updates themselves?

Hi,

First: Sorry if this has been answered before. I just don't seem to be able to get the right keyword combination to find the answer I'm looking for. So . . .

On a Galaxy S4 running Android v4.4.2 KitKat, I see that in Settings | Application Manager, we can enable/disable "Show notifications" for most individual apps. If we choose an app, and disable (ie. uncheck) "Show notifications" for that app, does that mean the app will no longer get automatically updated?

I want the apps to be auto updated, but I don't want to be constantly reminded every time that happens. Seems like I spend as much time clearing these notifications as I do actually using the phone these days. Thank you for your thoughts and suggestions.

Regards . . .

I know the message says "you may miss updates", but it's the Play Store app which is generating those, so my guess is that you'd need to disable notifications for Play Store rather than the individual apps.

I have to admit that the idea of letting third parties change the software on my device without my even knowing it has happened makes my skin crawl! But then I would never allow automatic updates on any of my devices - I want to know what an update does and make my own choice as to whether I install it.

"Show Notifications" just disables the display of notifications for the app such as new 'tags' on Facebook, new moves in Words With Friends, things like that (which are also often configurable inside the app itself). That won't impact notifications of updates for that app. If you want to disable those, turn off notifications for the Play Store.

You can also go into the Play Store > Settings and untick the "Notifications" option. This will prevent you from getting notified about application updates. You can also adjust the "Auto-update apps" option to your liking.

I would encourage you to configure these options that are built into the Play Store application instead of using the system-wide "Show Notifications" option, which may have unintended side effects.

Hi colesplice et al,

I think I'm clearer on all this now: It's the Play Store that's pushing these "Update Available" notifications to the phone. Update notifications are not related to the "Show notifications" checkbox that's seen in the Application Manager.

The "Show notifications" checkbox that's seen in the Application Manager has nothing to do with updates. But rather, these notifications are like the envelope we see when gmail or a text message has arrived.

With regard to the Play Store that's pushing these "Update Available" notifications to the phone, we can go to the Play Store > Settings and untick the "Notifications" option. This is a *global* setting that affects all Play Store installed apps.

Additionally, once a Play Store apps is installed, if we locate that app on the Play Store > My Apps, we can click the hamburger/setup there and enable "Auto-update" on each individual app (only one app at a time).

So, I've gone into Play Store > Settings and unticked the global "Notifications" option. I'm curious to see if the apps that I have enabled "Auto-update" on, will actually update, and not notify me about the update.

Let you all know how this pans out.

Oops, this post and threads went off my radar. In Chrome, I have a Bookmark folder (in the Bookmarks Bar, under the URL field) called "Posts Open", and another folder called "Posts Closed". I just noticed this post still in the Open folder. Sorry for the very delayed reply thread. Here's the status:

I no longer get prompted to do updates for any apps. However, the apps are getting automatically updated without my need for attention. This is the behavior the I wanted. I do see the little white Google Play shopping bag with a check mark in it, in the phone's notification area at the top of the screen, but when I go into the phone's Notification screen, I'll see like "Avast", "Tasker", and "7 applications updated". Perfect for me!

Thanks for everyone's input and help on this :-)

Regards . . .
