after you install safestrap recovery, on boot you'll be able to push menu for safestrap recovery or search to continue. if you go into recovery, it's one of the options.
i take it the root went well?
I'm brand new to rooting (just did it first time yesterday) so excuse my ignorance, but what is safestrap and what does it do? I've seen discussions on it but still not sure if it's something I rly need?Safestrap | Hash-of-Codes
should be able to find it there. i figured it was in Hashcode's Corner, but i don't see it either. meh, that's the blog i got it from.
it installs just like any other APK. you need to enable non-market-sources, or some such, though in order to install it.
I am roughly into week 2 or so of my root/rom experience and I am really enjoying it. I am, however, discovering that there doesn't seem to be quite as many choices of roms as I had expected. Not only do you have to know that you are looking for a rom dedicated to your particular device (mine is a Razr Maxx XT-912), you also have to know which kernel you are on. The Christmas leak is commonly referred to as ".8" and the more recent OTA version is ".16". Both of these are for Jelly Bean. Then there is the Safestrap vs ClockworkMod recovery choices.
I have been finding that the more that I read, the more that I don't know! It's a never ending process but it is entertaining
you can tell it to use either internal or external storage. i don't know why you'd put it in internal, but you can if you really want to.
safestrap is a custom recovery module.
after you install it, you'll be asked to reboot your phone. when you do, you'll get a little robo-boy and two options at the bottom on the screen - continue booting on the search key, or boot into safestrap on the menu key. this happens every time you reboot your phone from now on, as well, not just this time.
if you hit continue, your phone will continue to boot regularly and you'll be back to business as usual.
if you hit recovery, you'll be brought to a menu where you have a couple options:
that's not a complete list, but those are the big ones. it's a good way to backup your phone in case something really bad happens.
- it allows you to make backups of your phone. not backups like titanium makes backups of apps, but backups of the whole phone. operating system, cache, data, everything. you make one, you can FDR you phone til you're blue in the face, and you go back into recovery and you'll be able to reinstall that backup and your phone will be exactly like it was when you made it. texts, dialed numbers, caches, everything.
- it allows you to, as mentioned, restore your backups.
- it allows you to install custom ROMs. a ROM is an operating system. it's a whole new android experience. or the same old one, only with less bloat. there are a ton of them out there.
- it allows you to clean out the cache partition, which can get full and slow your phone or give you error messages
- it allows you to run a fix permissions on you phone, which can fix some problems when apps don't quite work right.
- you can do a FDR from here as well, if for some reason you can't get to it the usual way.
edit add: in answer to your question, yes it is something you really need. you may not need all of its utility now, but at a minimum the complete backup is a really nice thing to have around. later on, if you get into ROM'ing your phone, you'll absolutely need it.
I agree! lately, the more I read, I'm confused
I use Safestrap and flashed Kexec Rom to slo t1. Been using it for 3 weeks now, but would like to try another. I have no idea how to completely remove the Rom from Safestrap! Yes, i know that I can install a new Rom to Slot 2, but i would prefer just to dump any Rom that I no longer care to use.
Can anyone help? Ssith?
Thanks!
I found some good tutorial videos for root related matters at rootjunky.com
Just make sure that you select the device that you want info on, ie. Razr Maxx.
I do not have the screen open to look at, however when you go into SS upon boot, one of the options will take you to where you can delete the slot and start over again. I believe that the website mentioned above might cover it in one of the videos.
You want to always pay attention to when a dev tells you to wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache, system, etc.
to remove a rom, you need to activate a different rom and then go into the menu and delete whatever inactive one you want. should be pretty obvious, just make sure you've got a different one active before you try to delete the old one.
concerning nandroid: safestrap is equivalent to nandroid. it's just only usable* on locked devices, most commonly motorola. make sure those people are talking about locked bootloader phones, because if they're talking about making nandroid backups on, say, galaxy phones, or nexus models, you're not getting good information.
if you don't care about data (and if you do TiBu backups, why would you?), you really never need to do a stock rom backup. you can just reflash from the ones included in the rooting guides. other roms, however, you can modify the settings, and if you do something really cool, you can save it.
OTA rootkeeper is a good program, i'd suggest downloading it just in case. if they push a surprise OTA bugfix or something, it'll save you a lot of hassle.
i hope i got everything. keep reading, there's an absurd amount of information out there. if i'm wrong about things, or simply have outdated information, please tell me so that i can help people correctly.
and, as usual:
**You and you alone are responsible for your phone shenanigans!**
*not really, but there are other options on unlocked bootloaders and the author doesnt' support anything but moto devices.

Thanks! Very silly Q at this point, but I have to ask. Using SS and deleted a rom and added another. All went well. As for SS Recovery BU, when u say it backs up the entire phone do u mean both the stock side and Slot 1, per say. i only have stock and Rom1 activated, but should I activate another, say Slot2 would the backup include all of this data? Or does it just back up the slot that is active when the Bu is run in recovery??? thanks!!!!!!!1
