Root Can you root via Android system recovery and not CWM?

QUESTION :
Is it possible to flash BreakoutRoot.zip (mtmichealson's root method) via Android system recovery 3e? (It came with my breakout default)

The thing is, there's an option in the recovery menu called "apply update from sdcard" and essentially lets you choose a .zip to apply.

I'm wondering if I could use BreakoutRoot.zip (by mtmichealson) and this could root my phone without having to get ClockWorkMod. I've heard this can flash ROMs and things like that before.

Does anyone have any idea?

Nope. I don't think so. Pretty sure that the android recovery 3e will only flash specially signed zips. You will have to install cwm, but it's a good utility to have if you will be messing around with rooting anyway.
