Canceling and returning to Verizon service

Does anyone know if I were to cancel my service w/ Verizon, How long before I could come back and reactivate my number without having to sign a new contract?

I remember with the other carriers, (can't remember which one exactly) when I canceled, they said I have a few months before my old number goes to another customer.

Well, you are never required to sign a contract. That just simply gives you device discounts. If you have the phone, you can come back month-to-month and just reactivate it. As for keeping your number, why not port it?

Yeah, what he said. I would port it to Google Voice. Then the number is in the ''cloud''.
