Cancelling contract - Need help

Elanks

Lurker
Hello, I have an epic 4g touch (samsung galaxy s2) though Sprint and was forced to cancel it and my service ends in about a week. I was just wondering what my options are.

To my understanding I can not use this phone with any other provider - I was eying the virgin mobile prepaid plans. If that's the case, what would be the best way to go? Are there any other good phones that I can unlock and use with their service? Reason I ask that is because my brother uses them and he has had screen troubles with their best phone, twice.

If at all possible I would love to keep this phone. Sorry, I am quite ignorant about this so any help is appreciated.

I don't know if Virgin is GSM or CDMA. If it's GSM and your phone has a SIM card, then you need to call Sprint before you cancel the contract and get your phone unlocked. If it's CDMA, then you're screwed.

Correct to A.Non ^^

A working and good condition GS2E4GT is worth plenty as it's a very popular phone and relatively recent. You can sell it to someone whose getting sprint or upgrading their sprint phone and use that fund to buy either the galaxy nexus or another GS2 for gsm and then use prepaid for it. Tmobile has some pretty decent prepaid plans if you live in a good area with good connection and coverage.

Try Cricket they are super cheap and CDMA, I even heard they don't care about bad esn numbers, but you will need to find someone to flash you to Cricket.

So as long as I get a GSM phone, I am able to use it on providers that use GSM (like T-mobile)? There aren't any more factors?

You also have to make sure the bands are correct. I believe tmobile uses 850/2100 and att use 900/1900. Also gotta check if the 3g/4g bands also work.

I assume you don't have to check that if I were to buy a T-Mobile phone and use it with T-Mobile's prepaid service, correct? Only if I were to buy an at&t (GSM) phone and try to use it with T-Mobile? Ok, that sounds like a stupid question now..

Any suggestions on a good GSM phone? I would like to keep it under $250. I overestimated my need for a phone the first time, it will be primarily used for basic stuff - email, facebook messages, browsing a couple sites, and GPS. A decent camera would be nice, as well.

Sorry for double posting, but I want to be thorough.

My service ended a couple days ago, and I would really like to find a phone fairly soon. I've been looking at the myTouch 4g (t-mobile), this will work with the T-mobile prepaid plans without any trouble right?

^Yes, it will work just fine, and it's a nice enough phone for what you need. Any phone that was originally a tmo phone will work great.

epic 4G touch... is very new.. and since you cancelling with sprint.. did you leave on good terms? if so, then the phone should have a good esn; and you can sell it for $300 or more.

but if sprint locked it down.. then it is useless on sprint.

there are ways to "unlock" it.. and flash it over to other CDMA providers. but you will have to do the research on that.

@mrsbelpit, thanks. Just want to make sure, don't want to buy the phone then find out it won't work out. I am leaning towards the g2x though, I can't decide..

@dan330, what do you mean "good terms". As far as I know it was. What would be "bad terms"?

Thanks, James515.

They waived the early termination fee, if that's what you mean. I don't see how that would be "bad terms" though.
