Help Cannot clear old password and fingerprints

Before anyone gets suspicious this is a legitimate purchase new.

The problem is that the phone is functional so is basically unlocked, but a while back I played around with the fingerprint scanner and logged 3 prints and also set the password. Now I can't remember the password or clear the prints.

Yesterday I logged onto Samsung support and went through the unlock routine but that did not help. Next I talked to support and they were unable to find any solution and suggested taking to the support centre which is 50 miles away and there will be a charge.

I suppose I could do a reset but don't want the hassle of reloading everything again.

Does anyone have any suggestions for solving this please.

Thanks for the quick reply.

I went through the instructions and successfully set a password lock. Unfortunately that still leaves the password that protects the fingerprint. Can this be removed without having to do a factory reset.

Hmmm, apparently the fingerprint menu is still tied to your previous password. Kind of makes sense that it should from a security standpoint. Any chance that elusive Google account password might have been saved in your desktop browser? (Some browsers allow you to save them so you don't need to re-authenticate yourself by manually typing them in each time you access some online account. i.e. Firefox -- Preferences or Options >> Privacy & Security >> Forms & Passwords ; Chrome -- three vertical dot icon >> Settings >> Passwords )

I thought I had stored it somewhere but none of those found work. I reckon it is a reset.

There is not much on there that is important or haven't got elsewhere. What I am not sure of is what happens to the various programs I have installed when I do a reset. I assume that they are deleted.

If it does come to that, install Samsung's Smart Switch utility on a computer to do a full backup. Restoring a phone after a Factory Reset can be a hassle, using Smart Switch to do a backup and restore at least saves time and effort manually copying/moving your saved data around.

Fingerprint samples are usually stored in a chip that comes with the fingerprint scanner package. You can't delete or add fingerprint without a backup password, pin or pattern. Doing a factory reset would usually erase old fingerprint samples as well unless there is a hardware glitch.

Since nothing else worked I tried Samsung Smart Switch which has not been very successful. Programs have been save but none of the settings or the data. Also when I restored the system I have all the clutter from that.

Don't know if I have missed a step along the line?
