Cannot Get Library Books Transferred to Tablet

kaslkaos

Newbie
I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.0, I have Aldiko and Bluefire apps registered with Adobe, and I have Adobe Digital Editions (updated yesterday) that is also registered with Adobe on a laptop that is running Vista.
Here's the problem, and hoping you can help. I can't get ADE to recognize my tablet when connected to usb (Calibre on the laptop also does not recognize my device, but I haven't updated that in ages). Using Windows Autoplay options, I did get Windows Explorer to recognize the device. I tried both the MTP option, and the PTP option on my tab, and then MTP again, but Adobe won't see it. Tried restarting and plugging things in again bunches of time. Then tried tearing huge chunks of my hair out--that didn't help either.
Now I'm here trying again, bothering you kind helpful people--sorry about that, but I really want to read those library books (Ebsco host books in this case) and without Adobe Digital Editions working, I don't know any other way to do it.
I did try directly downloading on my tablet (ie. browser in tablet, borrow book, download, but I just get that little file, it doesn't download the book to Bluefire (or give me that option) and I suspect its not supposed.
So here I am, being a minor pain, hoping for an answer, but afraid it might be, "your device is not compatable".
Anyway, thanks for reading, now will cross my fingers.

Hi Zuben,
Thanks for taking the time to read my tome.
I should have specified "public library", so I don't get a choice (I think) of pdf reader. As in the books must be first downloaded to adobe on the desktop, and then transferred to the tablet and read with a drm supported app (bluefire was recommended by the library)
I checked the link, this is on the list:
Samsung Electronics co. LTD eBook Reader on Galaxy Tab Android , which I'm interpreting as a generic "yes" , or maybe I don't know how to read the list. So still stumped and hoping.

What device does Google think you have if you visit Play? (I've had a device listed wrong)

Vista doesn't recognize the device? (you said Windows Explorer to force Autoplay) It should show up under My Computer as another drive. My Nook shows up as drive E and F. Nook has an external SD card.

Do you have another computer available to try the USB connection?

Where is Bluefire app? on both PC and tablet?

Did ADE work before you updated it? If it did, can you revert to last version?

What happens if you disable Bluefire?

You can try Adobe Reader on the tablet rather than Bluefire. I use Beam Reader (purchased) on older Acer A500 (wifi only) There's other readers that conform to ADE.

I have an older version of ADE, and I'm running 7 pro. But it worked just as well on XP. Same for Calibre.

Well, a bit of an update. I updated Calibre and it does recognize my device.
Vista recognizes my device, it shows up as Compute>Glow Cloud (so I got creative naming it)> card & tablet (two drives)
So I checked in google play, and my device is listed as Samsung SM-T310.
Bluefire is an ereader app for android (on the tablet), and it is the one I am 'supposed to use' according to the library download site.
The library only allows downloads to the pc ADE and then transfers to devices, so if my Galaxy Tab is not supported, I think I'm pretty much stuck.
ADE worked with an older Archos device (which I gave away), but did not recognize my galaxy tab (neither new nor old version). The latest version of Calibre does, so now I know the problem is with ADE. Thinking I'm SOL now if I want to read drm'ed library books, because they are impossible to 'read' on a laptop (or I just hate doing it).
And no, I don't have another computer available. This one is it.
Thank you so much for you patience, I'm not sure if there is an answer, but thanks so much for trying.
ps. just deleted Bluefire from the tablet and that makes no difference, but if I can't get those books transferred, I don't need it anyway.

What AV do you use?
I worked for a place that had to install protected software for customers. XP did fine, Vista was a bear. You had to disable the AV to load the software (it used a dongle and had to recognize the dongle)

Uninstall current version. Can you save ADE to your computer, go offline, turn off AV and install? If it installs see if it sees your tablet. If it does, turn on AV again and try your book.

Adobe:
Try the EXE from here:
Download | Adobe Digital Editions Home

Here's another DRM reader from Play:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobisystems.ubreader_west

That's about all I can suggest. I'm still using 1.7 ADE. Haven't been pestered to update.

BTW - you aren't the only one having problems. Bluefire has only a 3.5 rating on Appbrain

Thanks for all the patience and help. I think this has come full circle until ADE decides to update/support my Galaxy (and some others), because I think I finally figured out what 'supports ereaders on Samsung Galaxy Tab Android' really means. I think it means that Yes, I can read DRM books on my device, but it does not mean I can upload said books to this device. Which means that as a public library user I cannot read books provided through online platforms(EBSCO Host) require transfer from PC to Android (ie, will not allow a direct download from internet to Android).
But I will try, one more time to re-install ADE through the link you provided.
And, of course I will try the lovely alternative ereader and who knows, maybe I can do a direct download.
Reading the reviews of Bluefire provides hours of amusement...what fun.
So really thanks, and I do mean that sincerely, for going down this road with me, and when I get a chance (tomorrow) I will try all and update.
I have been slogging through other forums on similar issues, and so far, the only solution is a sketchy one involving Calibre, plugins, drm and conversions, and I'll say no more on that (nor do I want to try, knowing my luck, I'll just brick my device and laptop).

BRAINWAVE
I think I finally asked google the correct question:
I googled this: can i download books from ebsco host to android
and got to this page Ebsco Support
I does say you can do a direct download, but using Bluefire (sigh) and Chrome as the internet browser. I've been using the default samsung browser, (sigh).
While this doesn't answer the ADE question, it maybe will solve my problem. Will update, promise.

]To answer last night's question, I'm using Avast Free version. I like your idea (off trying to install with av off) but for one thing.
I never mentioned it, but one of my download tries, I decided to download ADE from the link provided by the public library. When I did that, the AV program notified me that it had found a virus (rootkit something, didn't write it down) and the download did not happen. I went back to Adobe site and did the download. None of this is all that interesting but for the fact that since last evening, thethe entire southern ontario online database and links to it are closed/unavailable which makes me wonder if they've been hacked and are working at (or just a random coincidence), so
A) I can't even try out my new idea (ie. Download direct using Chrome for Android) because the download site is down down down.
B) I'm a little paranoid about virus's now, because I've never even had a warning before. I'm very careful and only download from official sources--as of yesterday so much for official sources.

BUT once again, thank you for all your tenacious help, if I find a solution, it's still thanks to you, for helping things through. Maybe tomorrow I'll have some experiments to report on.

YAY! I got my books downloaded.
So, in conclusion, I did not figure out how to transfer from PC to Android, but now don't need to.
Using the Chrome for Android browser, I get my DRM'd public library books downloaded direct to my Samsung Galaxy Tab.
Thanks again, Zuben, for all your help and patience.
